Ruth Krull, 95, died Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Chosen Valley Care Center, Chatfield, Minn., of complications from pneumonia.

Ruth was born on Aug. 20, 1916, on a farm in Guthrie County, Iowa, to Guy and Edna (Ridgeway) Minnich. She graduated from Coone Rapids High School in 1933, and the family moved to Grand Meadow, Minn., in 1934. Between 1933 and 1940 Ruth had various jobs including picking potatoes and housekeeping. On Sept. 4, 1940, she married Kenneth James Krull, and they made their home in Grand Meadow and later in Austin. In 1948 they moved to a farm in rural Spring Valley and lived there until Kenneth died in 1966. Thereafter, she has lived in Chatfield, Spring Valley, Austin, Faribault, and returned to Chatfield in February 2011.

As Ruth grew up with 11 siblings, she was the designated baker of the household and baked pies from the time she was 12 years old for threshing crews which meant baking 12-14 pies at a time. She enjoyed it so much that baking and cooking became her lifelong hobbies. Her skill and artistry with baking and cooking was well beyond the outstanding level. Ruth also enjoyed gardening and could grow anything she so desired because of her “green thumb.”
