Carmel C. Scheid Wald, 95, of Fremont, Neb., formerly of Austin, Minn., died Monday, May 21, 2012, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

Carmel was born Aug. 17, 1916, in Easton, Minn., to William and Louise (Hefner) Scheid. She attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Grade School in Easton and attended one year at Easton Public High School then two years at Sacred Heart High School in Waseca, Minn. She graduated from Wells High School in Wells, Minn., in 1933. She took post graduate courses in shorthand, typing and accounting at Waseca High School while working for Scheid Plumbing and Heating in Waseca.

Carmel married Glendon Worth Wald on Sept. 17, 1935, in Northwood, Iowa, and in a special ceremony in the Catholic Church in Philadelphia, Pa. In Philadelphia, she worked for Sellers Plumbing and Supply developing a pricing catalog for them and later worked for another plumbing firm in Philadelphia. The couple moved to Juneau, Alaska where their two daughters were born. They were en route to St. Paul, Minn. when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. Six months later, the family moved to Seattle, Wash. The couple later separated and Carmel returned to Minnesota to raise her daughters. Glendon died June 21, 1966.

Initially, Carmel worked at a bank in Easton and then moved to Austin, Minn. in March of 1947 and began a 32-year career with Hormel as a Kardex Clerk. Two years later, she was assigned to the dry sausage department as secretary. She held secretarial positions for several managers of the company. Carmel was the first woman advanced into Hormel’s corporate management, assuming the duties of personnel assistant manager. She was in the controller’s division of the Hormel corporate office, where she was responsible for hiring all office, clerical and technical employees. She retired on Dec. 31, 1979.

In addition to her Hormel responsibilities, Carmel kept the financial records for Powerite Electric, South Side Motors and many years for Ramsey Golf Course eventually assuming co-ownership briefly after the death of Giles Healy.

Over the years her hobbies included golf, bridge, reading, travel and visiting family and friends.

She was a member of a Catholic Church in Austin, a past president of the Austin American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the DOES, and later years a member of the Austin Country Club. Later, Carmel became a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont, a member of Nebraska Upsilon Master (Beta Sigma Phi) Sorority as well as a bridge club.

In June 2006, due to health concerns, she moved from Austin and became a jet setter living with her daughters. She moved to Nye Court Assisted Living in 2010 and to Nye Legacy in March 2011, after several hospitalizations. For some time, she still enjoyed attending Mass, sorority functions, playing bridge and going out to eat with family and friends. She especially enjoyed celebrating her 95th birthday weekend in August 2011.

Carmel is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Jim Hanson of Fremont, Neb., and Jeanette and Ronald Fusile of Warrenton, Va.; seven grandchildren, Jay (Donna) Hanson of Carrolton, Texas, Kelly (Pam) Hanson of Papillion, Neb., Ron (Tammie) Hanson of Fremont, Jeff (Teresa) Fusile of Carmel, Ind., Jill Eckert of Warrenton, Dana (Ray) Ryder of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, and Lt. Cmdr. Keith (Jennifer) Hanson of Frisco, Texas; 14 great-grandchildren, Danny Hanson, Joel and Tyler Krocker, Nicole and Josh Hanson, Regina, Joe, Alex and Wade Fusile, Bianca Fusile, Sabrina and Drew Eckert, Mina Carmella Ryder and Hannah Hanson; sister, Rita (McRea) Wilmert of Blue Earth, Minn.; brother, Marley Scheid of Mitchell, S.D.; and many special nieces and nephews.

Carmel was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Emil and William Scheid and Monsignor Alton H. Scheid and an infant brother; sisters-in-law, Marianne, Marcella and Elaine Scheid; nephew, Stephen Scheid; great niece, Amy Noterman; and her very special friend of more than 50 years, Giles Healy.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 25, 2012, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Donald Zenk officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery in Easton, Minn.

Memorials are preferred to St. Augustine Catholic Church or the American Heart Association. Arrangements are by Mayer Funeral Home.
