Bruce Hovland saw an opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade with the launch of his new business.

Known as the long-time owner of Sportts Restaurant, Hovland bought the building back less than a year after selling it last fall. The restaurant had struggled during that time, but he wasn’t ready to close its doors for good.

Three weeks ago, Hovland was back in business, just under a different name: The Event Center.

About 20 graduations, estate sales, baptisms and class reunions have been booked at the facility, which offers full restaurant amenities, from a buffet to seating to a bar. Hovland is also promoting the facility for auctions, fundraisers, retirements, showers and quinceaneras.

“I’ve been in the restaurant business forever,” Hovland said Wednesday. “Restaurants are tough right now.”

Hovland, who bought Sportts in 1993, sold it last September to Ken and Mary Shuck of Owatonna so he could help out his son, who runs Chester’s in Rochester, and his daughter, who restores hotels.

After coming into ownership again, he decided to streamline his job: no employees, flexible hours and the bills are still paid.

Hovland touts the facility as affordable, accommodating and versatile, located close to Interstate 90 and with an adjacent hotel. The nearly 6,000-square-foot Event Center can seat up to 130 people, not including the patio area, and up to 200 with banquet tables. The building is heated, air conditioned and recently renovated, and includes 10 televisions with DVD capabilities; a full kitchen, bar and freezer; linens, silverware, glassware and dishes; helium for balloons; and a dance floor for bands and DJs.

“The building’s all set,” Hovland said. “They don’t have to take the tent down. We’re got ample parking.”

The rental rate is $50 per hour. Bartending service is available, although renters can also bartend events themselves. Catering is available, or they can bring their own food.

“If you don’t have much money, it’s $50 — plain and simple,” Hovland said.
