LAKEVILLE — The Austin boys and girls track and field teams advanced three athletes to the Section 1AA finals at the Section 1AA preliminaries in Lakeville South Thursday.
Austin’s Carolyn Hackel, Nate Schwab and Omot Okello will all compete in Saturday’s Section 1AA finals, along with all of Austin’s relay teams and some field and distance running events, including girls’ pole vault, where Austin’s Abby Snater is vying for her second straight trip to the state meet.
Hackel re-set her own school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.58 seconds and she set a personal best time in the 200-meter dash on Thursday.
Hackel finished .03 seconds out of first in the 100-meter dash preliminaries and was .80 seconds of first in the 200-meter dash preliminaries.
She must make top-three on Saturday or run faster than the state cut time to get to state.
Madison Overby, who will likely run in the 1600-meter run qualifier Saturday, took sixth place in the 3200-meter run.
For the boys, Okello returned from an injury to advance to the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles finals. Okello took second in the 110s with a time of 15.13 and he took fifth in the 300s with a time of 41.74 seconds after missing the last week and a half.
“It was nice to see him back on the track and he fought through it pretty well,” Austin head coach Tony Einertson said.
Schwab beat his personal best time by four seconds as he took second in the 800-meter run preliminaries. Schwab finished in 2:01.41 and will race in Saturday’s finals.
“Taking four seconds off your time is a big accomplishment, especially in the 800,” Einertson said. “Nate had a fantastic race.”
Andrew Hagan finished sixth in the shot put as he missed a strip to state by a little over five feet.
Austin’s Caleb Bentley added a foot to his career best height in the pole vault as he finished sixth.
Saturday’s finals will begin with field events at 11 a.m. and running events at 11:30 a.m. at Lakeville South.
