Herbert (Herb) A. Schaefer, 85

Herbert (Herb) Alphonse Schaefer, 85, of Adams, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Herb was born on Aug. 2, 1925, in Adams, one of 12 children born to Joseph and Elizabeth (Mueller) Schaefer. He graduated from Adams High School in 1942. In 1943, Herb joined the US Army and proudly served his country in Europe during World War II. On Sept. 8, 1953, he married Dorene Vesely at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. He worked as a bookkeeper at Ulven’s DX Service Station, as a salesman at Millenacker Implement and as a petroleum route delivery driver for Osmundson Brothers. In his retirement, Herb helped take care of the church grounds and volunteered as a crossing guard at Sacred Heart. He was one of the founding members of the Armed Forces museum in the Adams American Legion. In May of 2010, he attended the Honor Flight to the World War II memorial in Washington D.C. Herb was a 65-year member of Adams American Legion Post 146, where he served on the Honor Guard as an Adjutant, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Council, the Knights of Columbus, and Olaf B. Damm Post 1216 VFW.

Herb is survived by his wife, Dorene Schaefer of Adams; sons, Joe Schaefer and friend Pat Thompson of Wyoming; Father Marty Schaefer of Waseca; daughters, Julie (Randy) Ochs of Faribault, Mary (Russell) Keating of Rochester, Lori (Lowell) Fabian of St. Charles, Minn.; Teresa (Dominic) Cimijotti of Rochester, Annette (Jim) Sinn of Rochester; grandchildren, Michelle (Kevin), Nathan, Erica, Sarah, Emily, Tyler, Anna, Katie, Mary, Alexa, Caleb; sisters, Florence Schmitz of Adams, Marcella Perrin of Austin, Rita (David) Sheedy of Arizona, Bette (Harlan) Smith of Illinois; brothers, Vernon Schaefer of Adams, Norbert (Linda) Schaefer of Alabama, Conrad (Judy) Schaefer of Austin, Roger (Wanda) Schaefer of Iowa; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; infant granddaughter, Melissa; brothers, Paul, Benno, and Fred.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Marty Schaefer and Father Thomas Loomis officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Adams Funeral Home. There will be a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Prayer Service at the Adams Funeral Home on Friday.
