Blooming Prairie beats Lyle/Pacelli 10-4

A little patience at the plate went a long ways for the Blooming Prairie baseball team in a 10-4 victory over Lyle/Pacelli baseball team Friday at Marcusen Park.
The Awesome Blossoms (12-3 overall) learned their lesson after they squandered an early opportunity in the second inning where they scored two runs on a single by Aaron Krejci, but Jamie Willette lined into a double play and Justen Ingvalson grounded out to end the frame.
“I was kind of way ahead on that one and I’ve just gotta sit on the pitch,” said Ingvalson, who finished three-for-five with a double and an RBI. “Coach has been pounding that in our head. Then we started sitting and we started getting runs and hits.”
The Athletics (4-7 overall) took advantage of a fielding error by BP first baseman Matt Zellmer to tie it up at 2 in the bottom of the third. But BP broke it open when it scored two runs on a two-out throwing error by L/P third baseman Michael Lonergan and Austin Moe doubled in another run to put BP up 6-2.
“When teams leave the door open and when they make errors that’s usually when we make our comeback or stride away from teams,” Ingvalson said.
The fourth inning started with Logan Underwood legging out a one-out double for BP.
“Logan Underwood hustled that bloop into a double and I think that little extra hustle got us going. That’s what we’ve got to do,” BP head coach Chris Staloch said.
While the L/P throwing error in the fourth allowed four unearned runs, the Athletics fielded better than they have lately as they had just four miscues on the night after having 29 in their previous three contests.
“We committed a couple of errors and bobbled the ball a little. But overall, it’s the best we’ve played in over a week and we’re happy with it,” L/P head coach Steven Baumann said.
On the mound, Krejci gave L/P a steady dose of fastballs as he struck out nine and forced six groundouts without a walk.
“I just wanted to get ahead early and then get them off on their front foot and make them pound it in the ground or strikeout,” the junior hurler said. “Our goal here it Blooming Prairie is not to walk people. When you give walks, you usually give up runs.”
The Blossoms also got a lift from Zach Herdina, who came up with two hits, an RBI, and two runs. The junior reserve is normally used as a defensive fixture.
“He hasn’t gotten a lot of at-bats but he usually plays good at second base for us. It was huge to get a couple of hits for him,” Staloch said.
L/P will win by forfeit over Hope Lutheran Monday, as HL has folded it’s team.
