Packer softball team drops two in Owatonna

A couple of ill-timed line drives took their toll on the Austin softball team as it dropped two games at Owatonna by scores of 4-2 and 8-1 Thursday.

Austin pitcher Marie Clennon was hit by two line drives — once in the head and once in the leg — in the opener and that kept her out of the nightcap. It also caught up to her in the second game when Austin (5-10 overall, 4-8 Big Nine) saw a 2-0 lead turn into a 4-2 deficit in the sixth inning.

The Huskies got six of their 12 hits in that frame.

“We had a little bit of bad luck with Marie, but she was a trooper and she battled through it and pitched well,” Austin head coach Steve Knox said.

Clennon went six innings, allowing 12 hits, one walk and three earned runs while striking out two.

Kaycee Lukes was 2-for-4 in the opener, while Sara Sundberg, Sara Alms, Robin Arjes, Bri Mayer, and Audrey DeVries each had one hit.

Austin fell behind early in the second game and never got back in it.

“We just couldn’t get runners in scoring position,” Knox said.

Jenny Yocom went six innings in game two, allowing 12 hits, four walks, seven earned runs and one strikeout.

Sundberg was 2-for-3, and Alms, Mayer, Rachel Donovan, Ashley Crump and Jolene Brody each had one hit.
