Candidate profile: Kathy Glowac, for school board

Kathy Glowac knows Austin Public Schools.

A 1971 Austin High School graduate whose mother was a teacher here, Glowac retired from the district in December after five years working in the administration office dealing with employee insurance and benefits. In her retirement, Glowac wants to contribute to the community and commit to maintaining Austin’s education as an Austin Public Schools board member.

“It’s just something that I’ve always been interested in and curious about,” Glowac said. “I’m ready to make a commitment.”

She is one of nine candidates to vie for three open seats in this November election. Board members Dick Lees, Aaron Keenan and Jeff Kritzer all face expiring terms this year.

Glowac is interested in the district’s fiscal policy, as she is a certified public

accountant and spent years working in public accounting before dealing with benefits. What’s more, she hopes to keep teacher-student ratios as low as possible.

“Any time you get too many kids in the classroom, it just doesn’t work,” Glowac said. “I’ve seen that with my mother teaching, I’ve seen that when I was in school, and I’ve seen that talking with teachers.”

Glowac hopes to keep Austin schools strong, as her grandson will attend Woodson Kindergarten Center in about three years.

“We want to make sure we retain good children and keep families growing in Austin,” she said.
