Leaders in Veteran Employment, a seminar based on how to hire veterans, will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 26 at Mayo High School in Rochester.
“They’re going to discuss military service and their experiences and how that translates into civilian careers and identify the barriers that exist in hiring veterans,” said Dari Sunderland, an event organizer.
State agencies, military organizations and private companies will work together to put veterans to work, she added.
The seminar invites HR professionals, hiring managers, admissions counselors, career counselors, front line supervisors and anyone who may have direct interaction with veterans and who wants to better understand the skills a veteran has to offer and the obstacles and barriers they face to attend.
Sunderland said unemployment among Minnesota’s Veterans is over twice that of non-veterans, and collaboration would be the solution.
Currently, 150 people plan to attend. Several people will speak during the seminar, including Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and representatives from the Mayo Clinic.
The seminar is hosted by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, Minnesota National Guard, and Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Mayo High School is located at 1420 11th Ave. SE in Rochester. There is no charge. RSVP to dsunderland@wfdi.ws or 507-252-6524.
