Digital billboard proposal heads to Planning Commission

City Council members voted Monday night to refer a digital billboard request back to the Austin Planning Commission.
Fairway Outdoor Advertising owns the two billboards at the intersection of First Ave. SW and 12th St. SW; the company has requested to turn them into digital billboards.
The first time the Austin Planning Commission heard the request, it recommended denial “due to the proximity of the public road intersection,” according to a memo sent from the Planning Commission to City Council members.
City Council referred the matter back to the commission because Fairway Outdoor Advertising has provided more information. The commission needs to review any new information so it can give an updated recommendation.
The digital billboard would be available for advertising and local law enforcement officials to post Amber alerts, weather or public safety alerts in the event of an emergency.
