A couple of strange plays set the Packers off track and the Falcons hitters did the rest of the work as Faribault (5-5 overall, 3-5 Big Nine) beat Austin 14-1 in five innings in a baseball game at Dick Seltz Field Tuesday.

Austin pitcher Jacob Thompson retired the first six hitters he faced. But that came to an end in the top of the third when Austin allowed an infield single on a dribbler and first baseman’s Andrew Kaiser’s glove broke on a play that would’ve been the second out of the inning.

The next five Falcons reached base to make it a 4-0 game.

“I’ve seen (the broken glove play) happen before, but it just seems the way our season is going, that sort of thing is popping up a lot more,” Austin assistant coach Jamie Boelter said. “It’s this weird, odd snowball effect and that’s what we have to avoid.”

Austin loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth and Josh Hart drew a walk to make it 4-1 with two outs, but Marcus Stoulil grounded out to first to end the frame.

Faribault responded by getting five hits and scoring 10 runs in the top of the fifth.

Boelter was hoping for a better effort from the Packers (1-8 overall, 1-7 Big Nine), who had just picked up their first win last Friday.

“We can play such good baseball like we did against Century and then revert to a couple of bad innings that hurt us,” he said. “Thompson was flying through the order and those two early plays took away our momentum.”

Austin head coach Troy Watkins was  at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Fla. as two of his students qualified for national competition.
