It may be nearing decision time for the county board.
After a 6 p.m. informational meeting on the 12-county Southeastern Minnesota Human Services Redesign Project tonight, the board is scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether to move forward. The commissioners could also table the vote until July.
County officials have many questions and concerns about merging counties’ Human Services departments.
Votes in other counties are producing mixed results. Winona, Fillmore and Goodhue have voted to opt out. Steele, Dodge and Waseca have voted to move forward. Freeborn table the vote until July.
While Mower County commissioners agree there needs to be change for Human Services departments that are seeing increased demands and decreased state and federal funds, officials still have many questions.
Commissioner Jerry Reinartz questioned whether it will produce any cost savings. He has also said the board won’t decide to move forward until it knows what other counties are doing.
If the county board votes to move ahead, it can still back out later.
The county board meeting is scheduled to start with Human Services business at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the county board room of the Government Center. The regular meeting begins around 9: 30 a.m.
