The Austin girls track and field took sixth out of seven teams at the Cougar Relays at Mankato East Thursday.

The Packers had some strong performances on the 4 x 1-mile relay where Madison Overby and Haley Splinter both ran season’s best times.

Overby, a seventh grader, ran the mile in 5:28.91 and the school record is 5:25. The other two runners on the team, which took fourth, were McKenzie Besel and Justice Tabor.

The group of Emily Bachmeier, Darion Hunt, Kaelyn Matthews and Carolyn Hackel took third in the 4 x 100 relay and fourth in the sprint medley relay.

Hackel also ran the 400-meter dash in 1:02 in her first time in the event.

While Austin didn’t have enough field event athletes to compete in the relays, they did have some strong individual performances as sophomore Abby Snater had a 10-foot, 6-inch pole vault and seventh grader Rachel Quandt had a 4-8 high jump. Quandt also ran the 300-meter hurdles in 50.65 seconds.

The 4 x 800 relay team of Overby, Besel, Haley Splinter and Averi Splinter finished fourth.
