The Riverland baseball team opened the Regional tournament with a 6-4 win over Ridgewater (22-13 overall) in St. Cloud Thursday.
Riverland freshman Jordan Mondeel knocked in three runs to lead the offense and Tyler Jones picked up the win on the mound for the Blue Devils (30-12 overall).
Jones, a sophomore from Rapid City, S.D., didn’t walk any hitters, but he hit three batters on two strike counts, and they all scored.
“Other than hitting a few batters, he threw a nice game,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “He pounded the zone and threw strikes.”
Riverland will take on Dakota County Friday at 3 p.m. at St. Cloud. Dakota returns its top two pitchers from last season and RCC will likely see one of them.
“They’re very solid and they’ll be a challenge for us,” Koenigs said.
RCC also had two players named to the All-State team — sophomore pitcher and catcher Kyal Williams and freshman shorstop Mat Boswell.
