Construction to close stretch of 14th St. for 8 weeks

Austin drivers navigating through the northwest quadrant should keep an eye out for delays and closures starting next week.
Work is scheduled to begin Monday for an eight-week construction project on 14th Street NW from Oakland Avenue to Eighth Avenue. City Engineer Jon Erichson said the road would see a number of improvements.
“It will be utility work, which will consist of water, storm sewer, sanitary sewer and electrical,” Erichson said. “Then milling the surface and putting a four-inch overlay.”
Erichson said crews were planning on keeping the junctions where 14th Street NW met Fourth Avenue and Eighth Avenue open as much as possible during the project to allow some traffic through.
“They will remain open most of the time,” Erichson said.
He expects the project will be completed toward the end of August or beginning of September.
Traffic light replacement
Despite the City Council giving its approval to replace a traffic light at the intersection of Oakland Avenue W and First Street, Erichson said the replacement isn’t likely to happen this year.
The waiting period for traffic signals, which must be custom ordered for each intersection, tends to be long, he said. The work itself will likely get pushed back to next year.
