Austin drivers navigating through the northwest quadrant should keep an eye out for delays and closures starting next week.

Work is scheduled to begin Monday for an eight-week construction project on 14th Street NW from Oakland Avenue to Eighth Avenue. During the project, lanes going both directions on 14th Street NW will be closed to through traffic, said Steven Lang, assistant city engineer. Traffic will be detoured to Eighth Street NW.

“There will be access to Walgreens, Family Eye Care and Our House Assisted Living,” Lang said. “We’ll have a small area coned off so they have access.”

City Engineer Jon Erichson said the road would see a number of improvements.

“It will be utility work, which will consist of water, storm sewer, sanitary sewer and electrical,” he said. “Then milling the surface and putting a four-inch overlay.”

Erichson said crews were planning on keeping the junctions where 14th Street NW met Fourth Avenue and Eighth Avenue open as much as possible during the project to allow traffic through.

Those intersections were likely to be closed during the last few weeks of the project to do a final paving of the street, Lang said.

Erichson expects the project will be complete toward the end of August or beginning of September.
