Janice M. Kuhlman, 77, Racine

Janice M. Kuhlman, 77, rural Racine, Minn., died Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, following a brief illness with cancer at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., where she had been a patient for one day.

Janice Mae Hess was born Aug. 20, 1934, in Spring Valley, Minn., to Thomas and Ella (Klingeman) Hess. She moved with her family as a young girl to rural Stewartville, Minn., where she grew up on the family farm and attended school, graduating from Stewartville H.S. in 1952. She was employed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for 3 years. Janice was married on Aug. 14, 1955, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stewartville to Harold R. Kuhlman. Following their marriage the couple moved to rural Racine where they have farmed for over 50 years, raised their family and continue to make their home. Mrs. Kuhlman was a longtime active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was active in it’s Ladies Aid.

Mrs. Kuhlman was a prodigious baker and she and her children sold a wide variety of baked goods at the Farmers Markets in Rochester and Austin for a number of years. Janice was a vendor at the Craftique Craft Shop in Stewartville where she sold wood crafts that her husband Harold would cut for her, and then she would handpaint. She enjoyed sewing, flower gardening and growing roses, shopping and collecting bears and bells. She especially enjoyed time spent with family and friends.

Janice is survived by her husband, Harold; one daughter and three sons, Robert (Mary) of Racine, Carolyn Kuhlman of Racine, David(Donna) of Racine, and Duane Kuhlman of Racine; one granddaughter, Kristina (Aaron) Laumann and one step-grandson, Ben (Katrina) Wheeler-Floyd; two sisters, Betty Schuman of Stewartville and Margery Henselin of Rochester; two sisters-in-law, Beneda Hess of Stewartville and Jo Mae Hess of Chatfield, Minn., and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald; her parents; her sister, Doris Henselin; and two brothers, Eugene Hess and Warren Hess.

The funeral service for Janice M. Kuhlman will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley Township, Minn., with Pastor Ron Prigge officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at Griffin-Gray FH in Stewartville and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday afternoon.
