The Mower County Historical Society is inviting the public to bring a lunch at noon on Thursday, Aug. 23, and enjoy the final installment of this season’s Lunchbox History Series.
Arcola Mills Historic Foundation staff member Mary Smith will present a biographical sketch about John Mower, the county’s namesake. Even though Mower never stepped foot in Mower County, he made a lasting impact with his brother in the Stillwater area running the family mill. Smith will discuss the life of this man as well as the correct pronunciation of Mower County’s name.
A special Lunchbox History Series event will then take place on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the Hormel Historic Home. Starting at noon, historian and author John Christgau will present his book, “The Battle of Birch Coulee: The Epic Battle of the Dakota War.” Christgau, a Mower County native, will discuss this important battle to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Dakota War in Minnesota. Books will be available to purchase.
The programs are free, but donations are appreciated. For more information on the Lunchbox History Series, contact MCHS at 437-6082 or visit mowercountyhistory.org.
