The Packers girls swimming and diving team won all 12 events as they cruised to their first dual win of the season with a 92-84 victory over Mankato East Ellis Middle School Tuesday.

The Packers took the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle, the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-freestyle.

“It’s a really great confidence booster for everyone because it proves we are good and we can go out there and beat teams,” said Helen Heimark, who took first in the 100- and 200-freestyles and swam on the first place 200- and 400-freestyle relay teams. “One hundred yards is one hundred yards, no matter who you’re competing against.”

While most of Austin’s wins were pretty lopsided, senior Emily McAlister faced tough competition in the 100-yard breaststroke when Mankato East’s Chandra Bouma took a slight lead heading into the final turn. But McAlister turned it on down the stretch and won the race by a little less than a second.

“I knew it was my race and it belonged to me,” McAlister said. “I keep thinking that in my head. I saw her creeping up on me in my peripheral vision, and I was like ‘no, this is my race.’”

In diving, Austin junior Autumn Laury established a big lead with her second dive and won the event comfortably with a score of 192.15.

“It was pretty good,” Laury said. “There’s a few dives that needed some work. But diving’s kind of a day to day thing and you never know.”

Laury, who is in her fourth year of varsity diving, said she’d eventually like to get back to the 200-point mark, which she achieved last season.

“I’m definitely shooting for it this year,” she said. “I’ve got to work on my approach and my entry.”
