Eggum, Hirsch and Williamson have big meet for Austin wrestlers

Ethan Eggum, Michael Hirsch and Nate Williamson all went undefeated for the Austin wrestling team Saturday at the Champlin Park Invitational.

The Packers placed 10th overall in the 12-team field and competed against two state ranked teams. Austin fell to No. 20 ranked Hibbing (Class AA) 45-25 in the first round; dropped a 51-21 decision to No. 13 ranked Wayzata (AAA) in the second round; scored a 39-33 victory over Goodhue in the third round; and fell to New Ulm 39-36 in the fourth round.

“We had tough starts in each of the four duals,” said Austin head coach William Kenney. “We dug ourselves into deep point deficits, ones we couldn’t come back from. Losing by fall has become all too common for some on our team. We have to get better in that area to be successful as a team in this last month of the season.”

Grand Meadow gets past Pine Island

The Grand Meadow girls basketball team led by one point at halftime and held on for the 59-52 victory at Pine Island Saturday. Jessica Benson led the team with 23 points, while Andrea Swanson tallied 18 points, including 15 in the second half.

The Superlarks were 18 of 42 from the field and made 17 of 25 free throws.

“When it come down the stretch, the girls did a nice job,” said Grand Meadow head coach Dawn Baudoin.

With the win, the Superlarks improve to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the Southeast Conference.

Southland’s Hegge, Schroeder go 3-0

Southland wrestlers Grant Hegge at 125 pounds and Matt Schroeder at 130 pounds each went 3-0 at the Riceville Invitational Saturday.

“They had some decent competition, and that’s what I like about it,” said Southland head coach William Feuchtenberger.

Angel Paz-Reyes at 103 pounds, Alex Churchill at 135 pounds and Nick Poshusta at 160 pounds each went 2-1.

Riverland women win again

The Riverland Community College womens basketball team used a 56-point second half to cruise to a 89-44 victory at Minneapolis Saturday. Anna Hebrink did not play because of a reinjured ankle. AunDreah Aune led the Blue Devils with 20 points, while Krissy Schemmel tallied 18. Riverland is now 15-3 on the season.

Riverland men play tough in loss

The Riverland Community College mens basketball team trailed by three at the break at highly touted Minneapolis Saturday and fell 99-79.

Jason Simmons led the Blue Devils with 26 points.
