The Cedar River Watershed District tackled another project Tuesday that will aid with Austin’s flooding issues.

CRWD staff, along with a Conservation Corps Minnesota crew installed a tree revetment near the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center on Dobbins Creek. Trees are stacked together, anchored into the bank and eventually become the bank itself. The project reduces sedimentation and further erosion of the bank.

“These projects are part of a long-term commitment to cleaning up Dobbins Creek, which will improve East Side Lake and the Cedar River downstream from it,” CRWD Resource Specialist Justin Hanson said in a news release. “Flooding events bring property damage and economic hardship to the community. But they also have a significant effect on our local water resources.”

Another project on Dobbins, upstream in Red Rock Township, also aims to reduce stream bank erosion.

The projects were funded by Clean Water Legacy funds from the state. Both projects aim to keep 59 tons of sediment from entering the river.
