Man jailed for allegedly firing gun

A 55-year-old Austin man was taken into custody after allegedly firing a handgun outside a downtown Austin apartment building.

According to an Austin Police Department report, Steven M. Daron, who lives in an apartment at 508 First Drive Northwest, was arrested and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, following an incident late Saturday evening.

Daron allegedly went to an apartment at 605 North Main Street and demanded to see a woman. He was told by a tenant the woman no long lived in the apartment building.

The eyewitness told police she saw gun flashes when Daron allegedly fired the weapon into the air outside Farmers and Merchants State Bank.

When police officers arrived at the scene, Daron was spotted walking in the direction of Wells Fargo Bank.

Police apprehended Daron and asked about the handgun he allegedly fired. Daron led officers to his apartment in the 500 block of 1st Drive Northwest and to a living room closet where a .44 caliber handgun was found.

Daron admitted shooting the handgun into the air, according to the police report.

He was held in the Mower County Jail, pending a court appearance.
