Upon his discharge from the Army, Dick returned to minor league baseball with the New York Giants farm team for two years while attending Hamline University, where he was captain of the Pipers.  After coming to Austin as part of the Packers’ amateur baseball powerhouse in 1948, he joined the Austin High School faculty as a social studies teacher and baseball coach in 1951.  On June 9, 1951, Dick married Rosalie Critchfield of Winona in Good Thunder, Minn., where Dick’s father, Rev. Paul Seltz, performed the ceremony.

In his 36-year coaching career, Coach Seltz never had a losing season. He guided Austin to 509 wins, 23 Big Nine titles, 16 state tourney appearances and two state championships. He has been honored by six Halls of Fame – Humboldt High School, Hamline University, Austin High School, the Minnesota State High School Coaches’ Association, Minnesota State High School League, and Minnesota State Baseball Coaches’ Association.

He served as president of the State High School Baseball Coaches’ Association and a member of the National Federation High School Rules Committee for five years. He also was elected twice as the Region Six Baseball Coach of the Year, named the Dick Siebert Award recipient and, in 1987, was chosen as National Baseball Coach of the Year.  Coach Seltz also was one of 20 state amateur baseball players from 1945 to 1960 honored at Town Ball Night on Sept. 10, 2006, on the Metrodome field in Minneapolis.

A partnership was developed between Austin High School, Riverland Community College, and the City of Austin to build a baseball complex on the college property. Austin High now plays its baseball games in this complex.  On Aug. 17, 2006, Dick Seltz Field was dedicated in honor of his life achievements in baseball.
