Saints stop Rebels

ADAMS — The majority of the Southland bats went cold as the Rebels baseball team had a six-game winning streak snapped in a 7-3 loss to Saint Charles (11-8 overall) in Adams Monday.
Southland (14-4 overall) tied the game at three when Alan May scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the fifth, but Josh Nicklay drilled a two-run homer over the left field fence to put Saint Charles up for good in the top of the sixth.
“There were some of us that just seemed like we were flat as a pancake and we didn’t have any fire at all,” Southland head coach Scott Retterath said. “When you’re in the conference hunt and you’ve got no fire at a baseball game, I don’t understand that.”
Southland had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but it couldn’t get a hit. As a team, the Rebels had just six hits, and three of those came from freshman catcher Lukas Anderson, who also knocked in a run.
“You’re not going to win many ball games with six hits and three runs this time of year, no matter how good your pitcher throws,” Retterath said.
Southland senior pitcher Tom Sheely allowed a solo homer to Cole Small in the first inning to make it 3-0 St. Charles, but Sheely recovered by retiring 12 of the next 14 hitters he saw.
Southland escaped a jam in the fifth when Alan May caught a line drive and tagged second for a double play, but the Saints eventually got to Sheely in the last two innings.
“Sometimes (Sheely) was dropping down on his curve ball and it was floating and it wasn’t breaking,” Retterath said. “When that happens, you can see the ball and they’re going to hit and they did.”
Soutlhland’s Adam Kiefer sat the game out with a sore hamstring.
