H. Odessa Schmidt, 97, of Austin, Minn., died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at the Primrose Retirement Communities.

Odessa was born Feb. 15, 1915, in Spring Valley, Minn., to Glenn and Hazel Odessa (Kester) Bly. She graduated from Spring Valley High School. She married Clarence Schmidt on June 2, 1935, at New Hampton, Iowa.

She volunteered for the Red Cross and the Mower County Historical Society. She made baby blankets for Rachel’s Hope and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Odessa worked as a clerk at a camera store in Austin and she later owned a drapery business. She loved to travel to Arizona every year.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence, son Terry, infant twins, sister Alice and her brother Glenn (Babe).

Odessa is survived by her children Gwendolyn (Robert) Marty, Charles City, Iowa, Margaret (Jerry) Nelson, Brainerd, Minn., Curtis (Dee) Schmidt, Belton, Texas, Dennis (Judy) Schmidt, Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter-in-law Sandra Schmidt, Balsam Lake, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Gordon Larson officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Saturday morning.
