Austin residents are already decking the halls. There’s no other way to explain how the Boy Scouts have already shot through more than 70 percent of their Christmas trees.

“They started off with 125 trees, now they’re down to 35,” said Terry Zabel, a committee member with the Boy Scouts. “This last weekend was pretty busy.”

Zabel, whose two sons were both Eagle Scouts, helps with event at South Main Auto, 109 S Main St. He said the Boy Scouts sell out of their supply of trees each year and tend to net between $2,000 and $2,500. The money raised goes toward summer camps and weekend camp outings, along with equipment like tents.

About a dozen boys make up Troop 109, and each participates in the fundraiser.

“They rotate through,” he said. “Everybody does their turn.”

The troop began selling on Nov. 23, and will continue until the trees are all gone. Those looking for one can stop by weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. or weekends from noon to 7 p.m.
