ADAMS — Southland senior Jana Schammel never really intended on being her school’s all-time leading scorer.

But it happened anyway.

Schammel, who now has career 1,615 points, broke Sarah Tompkins’ 17-year old scoring mark last Thursday in a win over Triton and she still has a few games left to add to that mark.

Schammel has been on the varsity team since she was an eighth grader and now she’s finally on top of the hill.

“I wasn’t really aware that I was that close to it,” Schammel said. “It never really crossed my mind and it wasn’t an extreme goal of mine. I would rather get farther in the playoffs, but as it got closer my family started telling me about it. It’s a huge honor to have it and it was a lot of work to get it.”

Southland head coach Bob Sheehan said that Schammel has never gone out of her way to rack up her points and she’s often been taken out of blowouts instead of letting her add to her total.

“It’s been on the back of everybody’s mind and it’s well deserved for her,” Sheehan said. “It’s not like she’s been gunning the ball to get it. She’s done it within the framework of the team.”

Schammel said the game has slowed down for her over the years and she also gave credit to all of the teammates who passed up shots to so set her up.

“(Playing) is not as nerve racking anymore. With experience it’s gotten easier and I know what I can and cannot do,” Schammel said. “I’d really like to thank my teammates. You think about all of the shots I’ve taken, but they’ve gotten a lot of assists.”

The Rebels (14-2 overall) are hoping to do at least two more things this year. They’d like to repeat as Three Rivers Conference champions, and they’d like to get past the second round of the playoffs, which is something Schammel has yet to experience.

Southland gained a little bit of confidence earlier this season when it took Carlie Wagner’s 50 points for No. 2 ranked New Richland-HEG to beat the Rebels 78-71 on Dec. 12.

“It’s gonna be a big year. We really want to get past the (second round),” Schammel said. “We’re gonna do everything possible we can to get past that. We’d really like to have a chance to re-do that (NRHEG) game and we’d like to win it this time.”

Southland will play at Lewiston-Altura Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Schammel has been on the Southland varsity team since she was an eighth grader and she’s been on of the team’s top scorers since she was a freshman.

2009-2010: Schammel averaged 13.2 points, 3 assists and 3 steals per game.

2010-2011: Schammel averaged 15.9 points, 4 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 2.6 assists per game.

2011-2012: Schammel averaged 14.2 points, 2 steals and 2.2 assists per game.
