DOVER — The Southland girls basketball team moved into first place in the Three Rivers Conference when they beat No. 6 ranked Dover-Eyota (18-2 overall, 13-2 Three Rivers) 80-73 on the road Thursday.
Southland trailed 11-0 to start the game, but it crept back and Jana Schammel, who scored 22 points, hit a half court shot right before halftime to put her team up 34-33.
Southland led by as many as 14 in the second half.
“This is huge,” Southland head coach Bob Sheehan said. “We didn’t play real well in the first half, but we kind of settled down and we built up a lead in the second half.”
Haley Kirkpatrick scored 17 for the Rebels, McKenzie Kirtz had 15 and Megan Mullenbach added 13.
The Rebels (16-2 overall, 14-1 Three Rivers), who have won 11 straight games, have already swept second place Chatfield and if they can win their last five conference games, they’ll have their second straight Three Rivers Conference title.
