HAYFIELD — The Hayfield girls basketball team got a huge lift off its bench as it clinched a share of its first HVL Gold Division title in school history when it beat Byron (13-7 overall, 6-5 HVL Gold) in Hayfield Friday.
The game was tied at 48-48 when Hayfield’s Abby Pollock scored inside to put her team up for good. Hayfield made two defensive stops in the last 30 seconds to seal the win.
“This is a huge win for our program,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said.
Hayfield junior Alyssa Monahan filled in for a couple of players who were out with illnesses and she scored 15 points, while hitting 5-of-7 from downtown.
“Alyssa’s a good shooter and she had a fantastic night against their zone,” Kindschy said. “We went down by ten in the first and second half and she hit some big shots. If we didn’t have her, we wouldn’t have had a prayer.”
Hayfield sophomore Jo Bungum added 17 points as she went 5-for-10 on 3s.
Hayfield (16-7 overall, 9-2 HVL Gold) can win the HVL Gold outright with a win over La Crescent next Tuesday. The Vikings won the first matchup between those teams 73-39.
