Despite unseasonably warm and dry weather, Austin didn’t break any weather records last year according to the National Weather Service.

2012 was the third warmest year on record in Austin, with an average temperature of 48 degrees. In 1987, Austin’s average temperature was 51.3 degrees while the city had an average temperature of 48.7 degrees in 1988.

Last year also marked the 12th driest year on record, as Austin had 22.19 inches of precipitation. In 1978, Austin recorded 14.3 inches of precipitation, the driest year on record at the NWS.

NWS Meteorologist Zack Taylor said the drought conditions brought on by last year’s weather will likely continue into the spring.

“We’ll start off as we were last fall, in terms of the drought,” Taylor said.

Minnesota has only recorded about 2 inches of precipitation for the year, while nearby Wisconsin has received more precipitation over the winter, meaning drought conditions could get better for Wisconsin this year.
