Two Ellis Middle School students brought home the title of “Best in Site” at the Solo and Ensemble Festival in Wells on Feb. 2.
Isaac Wollersheim, an eighth-grade alto saxophonist, and Emily Sayles, a seventh-grade flutist, were given the accolade following their performances at the competition, which included about a dozen schools. The Ellis Jazz Ensemble also performed at the festival and earned a “superior” rating.
“They are very dedicated students,” said Nino Tarara, band director at Ellis. “They are willing to work on things to make themselves better.”
Isaac, who also performed in Solo and Ensemble last year, played “Sonata” by Henry Eccles. Emily played her first festival with the piece “The Magic Flute” by Mozart.
“By being selected as a best in site performer, they have the opportunity to perform in front of all the others,” Tarara said.
Isaac performed his piece again at the end recital, though Emily had left before “Best in Site” was announced to make it to her dance team event in Austin, Tarara said, and she was not able to perform again.
