As Austin residents clear the snow away from their cars and sidewalks, they can expect to see a bit more fall Tuesday.

Austin received between 3.4 and 5 inches of snow Sunday night through Monday morning, according to meteorologist Dan Jones from the National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wis., and there’s a little more to come. The area missed the worst of the storm, however.

“The band set up just to the east,” Jones said, adding that Rochester saw 6 to 9 inches of snowfall.

Jones said the weather system would push to the east throughout the day Monday and Austin would see the snow taper off. He expects snowfall should only add up to 1⁄2 to 1 inch Tuesday.

“This will be lighter snow,” he said.

The rest of the week should be dry, with temperatures hovering in the upper 30s by Thursday and Friday, Jones said. How quickly the snow will melt depends on how much sunlight the area sees.

“If the sun comes out more … that might warm us up to the 40s,” he said.

Austin Public Schools and Pacelli Catholic Schools were among many area school districts to cancel school today in response to the weather. Riverland Community College canceled classes before 10 a.m.

Despite rain earlier in the weekend and the heavy, wet snow that fell Sunday night and Monday morning, National Weather Service hydrologist Mike Welvaert said Austin was not yet likely to see any flooding.

“It looks like this isn’t going to melt fast,” Welvaert said. “That’s an ideal scenario for limiting the flooding.”

The snow is expected to melt bit by bit, refreezing at night as temperatures hit their daily lows. Large puddles will gather up on sidewalks and streets, however, and residents who typically have issues with water seeping into their basements could see the problem return this week, Welvaert said.

Dry grounds may be itching for soothing snowmelt as spring approaches, but they likely won’t get much relief for now, Welvaert said.
