Gary Eugene Miller, 73, of Ely, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at his residence.

Gary was born on July 19, 1939, in Austin, Minn., the son of Virgil and Serena Miller. He graduated from Chatfield High School in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in Viet Nam and retired, achieving the rank of master sergeant. He was the assistant vice president of the Austin, Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and then worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Verna LaPlante, Ardeth Fell and Sharon Priebe.

Gary is survived by daughters Jenna Miller of Tower, Minn., Melissa (Andrew) Ortman of Duluth, Minn., Christa Riska of Minneapolis, Cathy Benson of Burnsville, Minn.; son Mike (Mary) Miller of Picton, New Zealand; stepsons Kim Gertz of Hamilton, Mo., Jim Gertz and Mark Gertz, both of Steele, N.D.; brother Doug Miller of Rochester, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Serena, Will and Arne Miller, Tessa Krohn, Macie Benson, Ryder O’Hern, Lilly and Isaac Ortman, Kalie and Marie Adkisson; two great-grandchildren: Finn and Asher Krohn.

Services will be held at Chatfield Lutheran Church on Monday, March 18, 2013, at 11 a.m. with visitation an hour earlier. Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
