The youth of Austin are about to be empowered.
The YMCA in Austin will hold its ninth annual Healthy Kids Day from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
Don’t be surprised if you see your favorite superheroes in attendance; The Y is encouraging all attendees to dress up as their favorite superhero, princess or character.
“When [children] get to wear their costumes, it’s not only fun for them but it’s empowering, and it’s fun to celebrate,” said Jaime Annis, Y marketing coordinator. “They’re excited to be here, and they’re excited to learn about all the different activities.”
Those activities include an obstacle course, as well as a turn tumbling through the Y’s gymnastics gym. This year’s Healthy Kids Day will add a snack station to the mix, as children will be able to make their own healthy treats.
“There are going to be things that the kids can put together and make themselves,” Annis said.
The healthy snacks and fitness routines are part of a larger mission for the Y to encourage a healthy lifestyle through exercise and good nutrition. Annis said a recent Y survey found less than 1 in 5 children were getting enough activity, and eating enough foods and vegetables. As the summer approaches, the Y wants to spur area youth to get more active and eat better.
“It’s something we want to stress, and it’s something we want to show how they can incorporate this into their daily lives,” Annis said.
