The Matchbox Children’s Theatre returns to the Historic Paramount Theatre with the classic tale “Rapunzel & the Witch” at 7 p.m. this Friday and 2 p.m Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14.
The show features several local, seasoned actors including Lia Culbert as the Witch, Angela Donovan and Randy Forster as Rapuzel’s distraught parents, and Kayla Byram as Rapunzel.
For director by Susan V. Hanson, it is her first time directing for Matchbox. Hansen is a theatre and speech instructor for Riverland Community College Austin and Owatonna campuses.
Most recently she directed the romantic comedy “The Philadelphia Story” at Riverland.
This version of the Rapunzel story brings together magic and suspense in ways that will fascinate the audience from beginning to end.
Rapunzel is kidnapped from her parents and raised by a wicked witch. Despite her upbringing, Rapunzel retains enough human instincts to resist the Witch’s evil spells with the help of mysterious friends in the enchanted garden.
The Witch keeps her locked in a lonely tower that no one can enter without climbing it with the help of Rapunzel’s long hair. A young prince discovers Rapunzel, and tries to rescue her. After much trial and tribulation, good eventually triumphs over evil.
The length of the play is about one hour and 20 minutes. Tickets are just $5 for children 14 and younger. Ages 2 and younger are admitted free of charge. Adult tickets are $7.
Tickets are sold at the door. Advance tickets are available at Hy-Vee Customer Service and at the Paramount Theatre Box Office.
