A group of employees, their family members and friends have found an effective way to raise money for cancer research during the past few years, and they aim to break their mark again next Friday.

The fourth annual Black and White Ball, hosted by Relay for Life’s Team IBI Data, is set for 7 p.m. April 26 at the Austin Holiday Inn grand ballroom with just as much support, if not more, as last year.

Team member Dagna Simmons hopes to break the $10,000 mark. Proceeds will go to the Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

“The first year, we just didn’t know what to expect, and we felt very successful,” Simmons said, and added the first event raised about $4,500. “Last year, the total was more like $10,000. We’re hoping that we’ll be able to surpass that this year. I feel pretty good about it, too, based on what our donations are.”

Simmons said about 150 people and businesses have donated gifts for live and silent auctions, including a plane ride for three, a hot air balloon ride, a birthday party by Enchantertainment, four free oil changes, gift baskets, video games and more. Like last year, organizers are setting up a celebration/memory wall so guests are encouraged to bring photos of loved ones who have either lost or survived their battles with cancer.

People often see the event as a good excuse to dress formal, as well. However, formal attire is not required. It’s all about having fun and raising money, Simmons said.

About 150 people attended last year’s event. But organizers have already doubled their presale ticket sales with 90 for this year.

Tickets are also available at the door. Presale tickets are $15 and available from Team IBI Data, Hy-Vee and the Holiday Inn. Tickets at the door are $20.

The Austin High School Jazz Band and a disc jockey will also provide entertainment. The event runs until 11 p.m.
