Bellisio Foods Inc. is looking to add another 2,200 square feet to the former Austin Packaging Company plant it purchased last month.
The Austin Port Authority approved during its monthly meeting Wednesday an amendment to Bellisio’s conditional use permit on the property, as the port authority owns the building Bellisio operates.
“Our plan is to grow it, and to grow with the city of Austin,” Raymond Vigil, plant manager, told the port authority Wednesday.
The expansion to the plant’s northwest corner would add a cooler/freezer area and a pie production line. Vigil said the expansion would bring a little more than 20 new jobs to Austin, as well. The project would cost $1.8 million, though Vigil didn’t know when it would start.
In April, APC owners filed for receivership, a step to avoid bankruptcy, after showing roughly $10 million in debt, laying off about 75 workers and closing its frozen pizza manufacturing division.
Bellisio took over APC’s lease of the building when it bought the company in June for $6.1 million, and needed port authority permission to approach the city’s planning commission with the expansion request.
