The amateur baseball scene will be alive and well over the next two weekends at Marcusen Park.
It all starts when the Austin Greyhounds and Austin Blue Sox will play in an opening Section Tournament game at Marcusen Friday at 6 p.m.
There will also be section games Saturday and Marcusen will host the Supersection tournament Aug. 16-Aug. 18.
“Everyone in our understands what we’ve got as far as facilities and a following,” Hounds manager Matt Cano said. “We’re really hoping to have an opportunity to play in front of our home fans in the supersections. But we’ve got to get through sections first, which is going to be tough enough.”
The Hounds (17-9 overall) won all four games against the Blue Sox (13-12 overall) this season, but that doesn’t mean the Blue Sox are going in with their heads down.
Blue Sox manager Josh Kunze said his team played the Hounds close in all of the matchups and his squad is coming off a win over top-seeded Mankato Mets.
“The last few seasons we’ve been saving our best baseball for the tournament time, so hopefully we are peaking at the right time,” Kunze said. “I love our chances to pull off an upset.”
The Hounds are hoping they’re hitting on all cylinders at the right time as they prepare for the tournament. Can said he expects to see some low scoring games.
“Everybody’s got quality pitching and everybody knows each other. It’s a clean slate, pitchers have to throw strikes and hitters have to hit the ball,” he said. “This is what we play for. We’re hoping all of the work we put in comes to fruition.”
The Section tournament is a double elimination tournament, with the top two teams advancing to the Supersection tournament.
