A local 5K will have global effects.

The Haitian Hustle 5K race/walk and kids races will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Faith Church in Austin.

Organizers will raise money to help children from the Lighthouse Children’s Home in Bon Repos, Haiti, go to school. The Lighthouse is run by Jesus in Haiti Ministries and is home to 12 children in grade school, most of whom were orphaned after the 2010 earthquake, and 14 young men who have finished high school and are preparing for college.

Registration and check-in starts at 7:45 a.m. Aug. 17. It costs $25 to register for the 5K and $10 to register for the kids races.

Awards will be given to the first three male and three female finishers. This is an official 5K with chip timing.
