Fitness and youth programming at the Y

You have the kids registered for school. What about after school? The Y is starting new fitness classes this fall. We have our youth sports, one-day camps and art classes.
The Y offers a variety of things for children to join: tennis lessons, swim lessons and gymnastic. Stop by the Y, or visit our website and see what we can offer for the youth.
The YMCA of Austin encourages sportsmanship, self-improvement and team building through our youth sports and activities. Children can participate in traditional team sports like soccer, flag football and basketball, or try activities like swim team or gymnastics.
Toddlers can also get an early start on hand-eye coordination through our toddler and preschool programs.
New kids fitness classes
These high-energy fitness classes are geared toward youth 7 to 12 and are free with family membership. Instructors will introduce youth to basic fitness moves and techniques. All levels of experience are welcome. These classes are also a great way to keep your kids (who may be too old for Kids Kove) busy while you work out with kickboxing, Bootcamp, Zumba and yoga.
All classes are free with family membership and run from 3:30 to 4 p.m.
The cost is $5 per four-week session for $1 Youth Members.
Co-ed flag football league
A preseason clinic with AHS Coach Vesel, his coaching staff and AHS players will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 for all grades. The clinic is at Wescott Complex on Hass Field. All league games will take place at Faith Evangelical Free Church fields. A youth sports jersey is required to play. The league runs for five weeks and costs $37 for members and $47 for non-members.
First- and second-graders will go from 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and third- and fourth-graders will go from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Girls volleyball camp
Join AHS volleyball coach Cindy Owen and the AHS players for a fun afternoon of volleyball. Camp will take place in the Y’s gym and includes a t-shirt.
The camp is noon to 1:45 p.m. Saturday Sept. 14. Cost is $15 for members and $25 for non-members.
Girls cheerleading camp
Hosted by new AHS cheerleading Coach Melissa Hauck and the AHS cheerleaders. Grades K-5 will learn basic skills and cheers. Camp will be held at Wescott Complex on Hass Field and includes a t-shirt and one night of cheering at halftime of the Oct. 4 game.
Registration ends Sept 20. Cost is $15 for members and $25 for non-members.
Youth art workshops
Youth can discover their creative sides and explore the world of art. Classes will be taught by Erin Mikels, an art teacher in the Fairmont School District. Come to one class or try them all. Classes will be held in the Preschool classroom, and participants should bring an art smock or old T-shirt to class.
Members non-members: $5 per class or $80 for all 18 classes 3 years to fifth grade, Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m.
Check our website or stop by the Y for a brochure and speak with the Front desk about tennis, swimming and gymnastics times and dates. If you have any questions about any of our youth activities, contact Cindy Bowe for swimming and art classes, Ruth Chamberlain for youth sports and camps and Kristi for fitness and tennis.
