Held at gunpoint, an employee at an Austin cell phone store struck back with a pair of scissors and chased his assailants out of the building, according to police.

The 57-year-old employee said two men entered the business at 1002 Oakland Ave. W on Friday night, and one approached with a gun while the other stood by the door. The employee was reportedly activating a phone behind the service counter when the suspect with the gun approached and demanded money.

When the suspect came around the corner, the employee struck back with the scissors, according to the police report. The employee told police he may have stabbed the suspect somewhere on the left arm.

Police spoke with several people in the area who saw the suspects running northbound on 10th Street. The suspects, two black men in their 20s, have not been arrested.

While the alleged assailants did not steal any items or harm the employee, police chief Brian Krueger said people should be more cautious in such situations.

“We don’t want the general public to take matters into their own hands,” he said. “This could have ended up much worse.”
