The Austin football team had trouble stopping the run in its season opener and will go against another solid offense as it prepares for its home opener against Mankato West 7 p.m. Friday at Art Hass Stadium.
The Scarlets (1-0 overall, 1-0 Big Nine) racked up 276 yards on the ground as they rolled past Albert Lea 64-14 in week one and the Packers (0-1 overall, 0-1 Big Nine) yielded 210 yards on the ground in a 35-21 loss to Faribault in week one.
The Packers showed they can move the ball through the air in the second half their loss to the Falcons. Ryan Synoground threw for 266 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions and Bret Lukes had 144 yards receiving with two TDs in the loss.
The Scarlets have been one of the top teams in the Big Nine over the past few years but lost to Austin by forfeit last season. West actually outscored Austin 57-23 before vacating the win due to an ineligible player.
