After seven months of panic, fans of wrestling can relax.

Wrestling has been reinstated for the 2020 Olympic Games after the International Olympic Committee overturned a decision.

Austin head wrestling coach Bill Kinney is glad to see the sport will be back on the big stage.

“There’s been a number of Olympians from Minnesota in wrestling,” Kinney said. “It’s always in the back wrestlers’ heads and the thought of taking that dream away for a kid is tough for a coach.”

The initial decision to drop wrestling came in February and Kinney was surprised to see it removed. Wrestling goes back to the ancient Olympic games in Greece and it was considered a fixture at the games.

“It was a wakeup call for everyone that loves the sport. I was shocked when they first pulled it,” Kinney said.

There have been changes to make the sport more appealing and easier to follow. There have also been some new weight classes for women’s wrestling.

Kinney said those changes helped bring the sport back to the Olympics.

“They’ve made some positive steps and they appear to have paid off,” Kinney said.

Wrestling received 49 votes to win in the first round of secret balloting by the International Olympic Committee. Baseball-softball got 24 votes and squash 22.
