Austin sophomore Jora Bothun will never forget her first varsity start at keeper for the Packer girls soccer team, and neither will most of her teammates.

Bothun made some clutch saves down the stretch and she finished with a shutout as the Packers hung on to beat Rochester Century 1-0 in Art Hass Stadium Thursday.

It was Austin’s first win in school history over the Panthers (2-6-1 overall, 1-1 Big Nine) and their first conference win of the season.

Austin junior Carolyn Hackel scored the long goal of the night on a break-away.

“It’s not like track and you beat someone for the first time,” said Hackel. “In soccer, it’s team orientated and no one player is to blame for a loss or to glorify for a win. It’s so cool that we can say every single player had a little piece to do with the big win that we had.”

Austin head coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo said the team had a meeting on Wednesday about playing like a team and he made a point early on as he let some of his starters sit out for the first few minutes. He liked how his starters and his reserves responded to the move.

“Those girls had to watch for the first few minutes and you could tell when they came in that they were playing with heart,” Camarena-Corzo said. “It was an excellent win and we played like a team tonight.”

Hackel’s goal came on a breakaway on an assist from Chloe Summerfield, who is usually Austin’s keeper, but she was playing forward on Tuesday.

Summerfield looked like a natural when she lobbed the ball past Hackel for the assist on a goal that came with 15:26 left in the first half.

“I just heard Carolyn call for the ball and I saw an open space so I passed it,” Summerfield said. “She just sprinted as fast as she could and she’s so fast. She kicked it into the net and it was awesome.”

After the Packers (3-3 overall, 1-2 Big Nine) took the lead, they mustered just one more shot on goal and Bothun helped close the door on the win. Bothun made a diving save, a two-handed stop on a free kick and a kick save in the last five six minutes to preserve the win. She finished with 13 total saves.

Bothun battled nerves early on, but she was able to focus in the second half.

“I was really anxious to just win and to be able to say we beat Rochester Century in my first game,” Bothun said. “The whole team did so great and it’s something that I’ll remember my whole life and look back on.”

It’s likely Summerfield will return to the keeper position for Austin, but she enjoyed her time as a forward on Thursday.

“It’s a nice treat to be able to play on the field,” she said. “I love doing both, but it’s nice to work with my team a little and get to know them better.”
