Riverland Community College will induct six new members to its Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 26 at the East Building Cafeteria at noon.

The inductees include tennis player Jon Iverson, baseball player Matt Cano, basketball player Sherri (Bosshart) Keller, tennis player Suzy (Jahr) Hebrink, baseball player Maurice “Ike” Joel, and basketball player Larry Resnik.

Matt Cano (1992-1994)

Cano played third base for the baseball team and he was twice selected All-Conference and he was named All-State and All-Region his sophomore year. Cano hit .362 his freshman year and .333 his sophomore year and had 41 career runs scored and 44 career RBIs. Cano didn’t always get a lot of good pitches to hit as he was walked 24 times as a freshman.

Suzy (Jahr) Hebrink (1985-1986, 1987-1988)

Hebrink, who is currently the Riverland Community College women’s basketball coach, helped the tennis team finish 9-0 as a freshman as she played No. 2 singles and No.2 doubles. In her sophomore year, she dominated at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles and she led her team to another Region Championship. She was very tough at the baseline and covered the court well. Suzy also played basketball her second season and she was an outstanding defensive player, who led the team in steals.

Jon Iverson (1972-1974)

Iverson led the tennis team to a fifth place finish in the state tournament in his freshman year and he was state runner up in No. 1 singles. As a sophomore, the southpaw won the state title and Region title at No. 1 single and advanced to the NJCAA national tournament in Ocala, Fla. He lost his opening match, but Iverson came back to win six straight matches and earn the consolation title for singles. Iverson was a terrific serve and volley player and he had great court awareness. He finished his sophomore season 23-2.

Sherri (Bosshart) Keller (1979-1981)

Keller was an outstanding center on the basketball team and she led her to team to a conference championship, state runner-up and one game from the national tournament as a freshman on a squad that went 19-4. She averaged 13.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game and she had 78 blocks as she earned All-Conference, All-State and All-Region honors. According to Keller’s coach Vel Moen, she was “the best player (he) ever coached).” Bosshart returned for her sophomore year only to have a knee injury and she played very little.

Larry Rensink (1958-1960)

Rensink was the MVP of the basketball team his freshman year as he averaged 21.4 points per game. He needed 33 points to earn the scoring title in his last game and he poured in 36 points. Rensink earned All-Conference and All-State honors, but in his second season he suffered a knee injury after three games and was sidelined for most of the year, coming back for the final three games. Rensink was left-handed, but he often went right-handed to the basket. He is still in the top-five all-time in a single season scoring at the college.

Maurice “Ike” Joel (1961-1963)

Joel led his team to two consecutive CMCC baseball championships and he earned All-Conference both seasons. The right-hander, known for his tremendous sinking fast ball and control, also earned second team All-American honors as a sophomore. The ten-year letterman in high school also played basketball for the Blue Devils and he led them to two SMJCC titles. In his sophomore year, Joel, who was a point guard, had Austin Junior College one win away from the national tournament. The team went 19-3 that year.
