Best Bets: Used books, old treasures and broken clay

The books are shelved and ready for sale. Boxes of shotgun shells will soon be chambered, and tips about fall safety are in sight. This weekend screams “fall!” Get out and enjoy it.
1. A caravan of arts
Events all day Friday, Oct. 11, Riverland Community College, 1600 Eighth Ave. NW, and Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NW.
Want to learn about touring and music? Want to listen to touring musicians? Done and done. The third annual Caravan du Nord is in town Friday, with workshops at Riverland’s fine arts building with “Booking & Touring on a Budget” at 2 and a conversation with Charlie Parr at 3 p.m. Then it’s plenty of music at the Paramount, with Full Circle at 7 p.m., The Cactus Blossoms at 7:45 and folk and blues artist Charlie Parr at 8. General admission is $10.
2. Good, old reads
10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11 and 12, Austin Public Library323 Fourth Ave. NE, Austin.
Scour the Austin Public Library again this year during the fall used book sale. The event, ending 5 p.m. Friday and opening again from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, features tons of used books, CDs, tapes and more. Get there before it’s all picked over.
3. Fall safety first
11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 1110 First Ave. SW, Austin.
Kids best not forget about safety, so State Farm, firefighters and police will be on hand at McDonalds this Saturday, along with mascots, free fingerprinting for the first 100 kids, a firetruck, pumpkin decorating, hot dogs face painting and a chance to have some fun in the nice weather.
4. And… Pull!
8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, Cedar Valley Conservation Club, 25026 Highway 218 N, Austin.
Fall is indeed the time for trapshooting, and there will be plenty of shell casings flying this Saturday at the Cedar Valley Conservation Club. The Austin High School trapshooting team is holding a fundraiser for its group. There are plenty of divisions and shooting games, including optional breakfast and lunch. Keep that in your sights.
5. Out for a stroll
Saturday, Oct. 12, Brownsdale, Minn.
Find a few treasures in Brownsdale this weekend during a town sidewalk sale. It’s also the elementary school’s “Walk About Town,” and the Brownsdale Fire Department’s fish fry fundraiser, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the school.
Other events
Don’t forget: It’s pheasant opener this weekend, so get that lazy dog out of the house for an invigorating hike in the field. Or, check out the youth hunt at Three Arrows Hunting Preserve in LeRoy.
