There will be no animal abuse charges against a man whose goat was found nearly dead in a northeast Austin home Sunday.

Renee Capote reported hearing moaning from a garage at 906 Seventh Ave. N.E. Capote investigated and saw what she thought to be a dog, but later turned out to be a goat.

Austin police were called and transported the goat to Austin Veterinary Clinic, where the goat eventually had to be euthanized.

Police were able to contact the goat’s owner, 37-year-old Abraham Palma Hernandez, who said that he moved the goat from land he owns outside Austin so he could better care for the animal. Hernandez produced a sticker from medicine he received from Austin Veterinary Clinic, claiming he was trying to nurse the goat back to health.

Hernandez was issued a citation for keeping a farm animal within city limits.
