Pheasant hunting, country music, food, charity: These are some of the best things. Don’t go too far because they’re all in Austin and Mower County this weekend and early next week

1. Young guns

Saturday, Oct. 19, 8 a.m. registration, Three Arrows Hunting Preserve, 78590 125th St. LeRoy.

Clean and oil those shotguns after last weekend. It’s time for more shooting. The Mower County Pheasants Forever is holding its youth hunt at 8 a.m. at Three Arrows Hunting Preserve. For more information and registration, call 507-279-0374 or email sthorpe66@gmail.com.

2. Calling all coats

Saturday, Oct. 19, 8 a.m.-noon, Hy-Vee, 1001 18th Ave. NW, Austin.

Get rid of that coat that never gets worn this weekend at the Austin Jaycees coat drive. Gently used coats are acceptable and will go toward the United Way’s cause. It’s also a good chance to mingle with other do-gooders and grab a snack.

3. All eyes on the neighborhood

Saturday, Oct. 19, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Mapleview Community Hall, 101 22nd Ave. NW, Mapleview.

Dig through the treasures, or get rid of some junk while you mingle with “Mapleviewites” this weekend at the Mapleview neighborhood watch and flea market. Cost is $10 for outside vendors.

4. Country music for the cops

Saturday, Oct. 19, 7 p.m., Austin High School, 301 Third St. NW.

The sound of Nashville hits Austin Saturday with country star Wade Hayes and up-and-coming singer/songwriter Kalisa Ewing. They’ll play for the Austin Police Officers Association’s annual Country Music Spectacular. Haven’t heard of Ewing? The country girl has now written songs for Kelly Clarkson and Kellie Pickler and is working on her own album. Check her out at kalisaewing.com, or meet her after the show for a CD and an autograph. Tickets $25 at the Law Enforcement Center or at the doors, or $50 for families.

5. Here come the holidays

Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1 p.m., Mower County Senior Center, 400 Third Ave. NE.
