The Austin gymnastics team opened its season with by winning the 7-team winter-warmup meet at the YMCA in Austin Saturday.
The Packers posted a team score of 141.150 and Rochester Century took second with a 133.550. Austin was pleased to get the win, but it knows it has potential to put better scores this season.
“We have places to improve upon in every event. At this point, I say we were surprised that we went over 140,” Austin senior Sela Fadness said. “Last year we didn’t want to go under 140 and we don’t want to do it this year.”
Fadness took first in all-around with a total score of 36.750. She also took first in the vault and first in the bars.
Austin junior Carolyn Hackel took fourth in the bars and fifth in the floor. She said the team was glad to hold its first competition in Austin.
“It was nice to get our nerves out in our home gym in front of our home crowd,” Hackel said. “A lot of things can happen. You can have good days or bad days and we’ve got to have good days.”
Austin’s Abby Bickler took first in the floor exercise with a 9.6 and Maddie Mullenbach took third all-around, first on beam, second on vault and fourth on floor.
Fadness and Mullenbach received some competition from a pair of Century gymnasts in the all-around as Century’s Natalia Jacobson was just .550 of a point behind Fadness in second and Century’s Andrianna Jacobs was .750 behind Mullenbach in fourth.
“The Big Nine is going to be tough this year and we’re going to have to hit up the Big Nine big,” Fadness said.
