The Austin area will bid a snowy, cold farewell to 2013.
After more than an inch of slick snow Monday, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory from noon Tuesday through 6 a.m. New Year’s Day. A storm system is expected to drop 2 to 4 inches of snow Tuesday, with the heaviest accumulation between 2 and 7 p.m.
Along with the snow, the weather service is still warning of extreme cold conditions. Wind chills reached as low as 25 below overnight, according the weather service, and Tuesday’s high is 2, with a low of 5 below.
The cold temperatures spurred wind chill advisories across much of the state yesterday. Embarrass in northeastern Minnesota bottomed out at 40 below zero at 6 a.m. Monday, and International Falls fell to 37 below.
Light snow also made for a slippery commute across much of the state Monday. The Minnesota State Patrol reports hundreds of crashes in the Twin Cities.
